Wang Yongqian, secretary-general of the China Electricity Council, told Xinhua News Agency on the 19th: “By the end of this year, the country’s installed power capacity may exceed 700 million kilowatts.”

　　The situation from the power sector shows that through continuous and high-speed power construction, the nationwide power supply tension has been completely reversed. Figures show that since 2002, China’s installed power capacity has continuously achieved three landmark leapfrogs of 400 million kilowatts, 500 million kilowatts, and 600 million kilowatts. The increase in power installed capacity in five years is close to the sum of the previous 52 years. The installed capacity and power generation have been ranked second in the world for 12 consecutive years.

　　Although China's electricity demand continues to show relatively strong growth, the possibility of a "large-scale electricity shortage" recurring is slim. The relevant person in charge of the China Electricity Council said that the country's power supply and demand situation will continue to maintain a "basic balance" in the next few years.

　　According to the forecast of the China Electricity Council, as the national economy continues to maintain rapid development, it is estimated that the average annual growth rate of electricity consumption in the whole society from 2007 to 2010 is about 10%. At the same time, China's installed power capacity is also steadily increasing, and is expected to reach about 900 million kilowatts by 2010, and the power supply capacity will be further enhanced.
